Without making any code changes if you were to add the Search and Replace RegExp filter from this comment and then add a new Search and Replace RegExp as a Global Filter against the Image URL field, and on the configuration page for the filter in the Search box use:
/^$/
...which will match an empty field only, and in the Replace box, enter your "no image" image as required e.g.
