Catering for different countries with multiple PT installations on one domain

Hi David/everyone
This isn't strictly a Price Tapestry question, but it does touch upon it and your opinion would be greatly appreciated.

Using the currency conversion you helped me with the other day, I have converted my USD datafeeds into showing GBP prices. I would like to offer the same service but for the US audience.
I thought of installing PT in a sub directory or subdomain (www.site.co.uk/us or www.us.site.co.uk) and the installation would have the exact same feeds as the UK version (maybe a couple extra) but converted to US dollars.

My question is, would having two 'identical' product pages (one in USD, one in GBP) on one domain create duplicate content problems with search engines?

I did think of making a complete mirror of the UK site on a .com or .us domain name, but again I thought there might be an issue with duplicate content.

I'm wondering what the best approach is...

Many thanks

Hello bat,

I just went back over the currency conversion mods you made and I recall that it's merchant dependant; so would I be correct in thinking that the majority of your merchants are priced in GBP but for your UK site you only need to convert the small number of merchants priced in USD.

Further therefore; for your US market version of this site; is the opposite required; e.g. convert the GBP merchants into USD?

Cheers,
David.

Yes, you are correct in that the majority of the merchants on the UK site are GBP and only a couple are in USD.
For the US version I plan to use mainly USD affiliates and maybe a couple of GBP affiliates.

I don't like the idea of using a lot of USD feeds and convert them into GBP, because many UK visitors won't particularly want to purchase from USA unless the product they want isn't available in the UK or is much cheaper in USA. And vice versa for the US visitors.

I'm probably making this too complicated but I'm trying to get it straight in my mind.
I want to leave .co.uk with mainly GBP merchants and have a .com or a subdomain with mainly USA merchants, but because of the lack of merchants on both currencies, I may need to borrow a couple of merchants from either side to use on their opposing currency side. Does this make sense? If it does, you're a genius cos I'm starting to confuse myself.

I was just wondering though if I included a GBP affiliate twice (a merchant's products in the UK installation and the same in the US installation), will that cause 'duplicate content' issues?

Thank you!

Hello bat,

If the sites are going to be predominantly different merchants then I wouldn't worry about duplicate content at all. Create your US site under an appropriate domain name; and then simply use exactly the same mod but "in reverse" - e.g. create a $gbpMerchants array, and $gbpRate variable and replace the variable names in the code as required - and that should do the trick!

Cheers,
David.
