Price comparison based on SKU

Submitted by johan_norlund on Tue, 2006-11-21 16:32 in

Hello David!

Quite a while since my last post, but I think is kind of big.

I use Commission Junctions datafeed service for ElectronicsStores.com and all of my merchants provide SKU numbers for their products. I would, like, do anything to be able to match products based on that number instead of product name.

Actually, more and more merchants are beginning to provide SKU numbers in their feeds. :D

I'm familiar with adding extra fields (as you have described that for me earlier), but after that I'm kind of lost.

Thanks heaps!
Johan

Hi Johan,

That's not single point modification i'm afraid; but if as you say more and more merchants are providing SKU numbers in their feeds then I will definitely look into this.

Perhaps an "major" update is on the cards for early next year combining this with API support. As you know i'm a little hesitant in doing too many upgrades as people tend to customise their sites quite heavily and there is no easy upgrade path; but there's a few things on the list now that will justify a new version soon....

(for anyone else reading this - don't worry if you're thinking about buying the script now; there's never any upgrade costs; as a registered user you can always download the latest version! :)

Cheers,
David.

"Perhaps an "major" update is on the cards for early next year"

If you need any beta testers Im happy to help - I have several sites with little modifcation as well as the more heavily modified sites you have helped me with

Yep i have some inside information, the big compare websites uses sku and barcodes to compare products.

So maybee there is a way to choose how to compare.

And there is a good way to import all products in the database.

SKU is the future, indeed:) I mean, Price Tapestry is a great script and the work David has put down in it is just amazing! BUT, to be honest, I don't think matching products based on product name is the way to go.

Products are very often named differently in the various merchants' datafeeds.

Maybe a way of doing this would be changing the URL from:
/product/Product-Title.html
to:
/product/SKU_NUMBER.html

I agree, comparison based on MFG NAME and MFG SKU is the way to go for the most relevant and valid comparisons. The product names tend to vary a bit more and you end up with many listings for the same item. (due to product name variations) Even then, having a "MFG Name mapping tool" would be needed.

Hi,

Was there ever a mod posted to compare by the Manufacturer SKU or Part#?

I'm adding feeds from CJ (about 15 feeds and 225,116 rows thus far) and only products from PCmall, Macmall, ClubMac (they are sister sites sharing identical feeds) display +1 price due to the identical product names, however I believe there are 1000s of items that should have between 4-8 merchants listed if the comparison was based on Manufacturer SKU or Part#.

I apologize if there is a posted mod/fix for this, I have tried several searches on the topic with no success :(

Cheers

Hi,

Have a look at the following thread for info on comparing by a product ID (e.g. SKU) field...

http://www.pricetapestry.com/node/775

If you need to add a new field (e.g. sku) to your database, the instructions for doing that are in the following thread...

Cheers,
David.
