Google search console couldn't fetch sitemap

Submitted by IG on Mon, 2019-03-11 08:45 in

Dear David

3 days ago, I submitted https://example.com/sitemap.php to the new Google Search Console. Immediately, it said that it couldn't fetch the sitemap. I thought this might be the case as the price tapestry sitemap is a kind of meta sitemap with links to the individual shop sitemaps and that it might take some time to fetch them.

After 3 days, there has been not change and I believe there is a problem and I would appreciate if you could look into this.

Kind regards,
IG

Hi,

sitemap.php on its own returns a sitemap index which is a standard part of the sitemaps.org specification and Google shouldn't have any problem with it - when you browse to sitemap.php directly do you see the index as expected? I'm wondering perhaps if there is a problem with the output for some reason - most browsers will warn if there is an issue with an XML document, otherwise you should be able to see the individual merchant sitemap links.

If you're not sure i'd be happy to take a look if you could post the installation URL (i'll remove before publishing your reply) and see if I can spot anything that might be causing an issue...

Cheers,
David.

Hi,

That looks absolutely fine - could you perhaps try submitting one of the individual sitemaps on its own - so from the sitemap.php output, copy one of the feed sitemaps from the <loc> element and then submit that directly - does that cause an error also?

Cheers,
David.

Hi David,

I submitted an individual sitemap and the status at google search console is unfortunately the same: "couldn't fetch".

Kind regards,
IG

Hi,

Yandex provide a validator - does this indicate all OK?

Hi David

According to Yandex everything looks ok.

It seems to me Google Search Console has a problem. It still shows that the sitemap couldn't be fetched, but the site is getting indexed now.

I am not sure what to do. I guess, let's wait for a week or two and see.

Thank you for your kind support.

I'm also having the same issue. GSC reporting "Couldn't fetch" for most merchants, only 2 reported "success." I checked several, they did display the xml product list that GSC showed "couldn't fetch." Very curious.

David,
Did search - google "couldn't fetch" sitemap. Apparently, this is an issue cropping up more and more. Mine validates, so not sure what's going on as my site didn't have this issue previous to all the new GSC rollouts.

Thanks all,

Will keep an eye on developments and report back if it would appear that any changes are required but as indicated above everything validates and people have reported on other forums that when the error occurs there is no associated log entry for the request from Googlebot so hopefully just a transient issue with the new GSC...

Cheers,
David.

Yay! Google just processed my PT sitemaps 5/2 - 5/4 and status is now "success" for all feeds.

Hello Paul,

When I request sitemap.php there is a parsing error - it looks like an empty line has been inserted at the top of the script. Can you check the file in your text editor and make sure the file begins with the opening <?php ... tag and nothing before - that should be all it is...

Cheers,
David.
