Please can you make sure that the file has been uploaded with the filename
.htaccess
It is called htaccess.txt in the distribution as files with a name beginning in "." are hidden on most operating systems which makes them difficult to distribute with that name.
If the file has been uploaded as "htaccess", the easiest way to correct the name is probably with your FTP program. In the remote window, right-click on the "htaccess" file and rename as ".htaccess" (without the quotes), and that should be all it is...
If still no joy, change rewrite back to FALSE so that you can carry on setting up your website and I will help you out further as soon as I am back online properly first thing next week...
