That is strange because clicking from a Brand or Merchant A-Z index to search results makes a simple index query and does not rely on FULLTEXT MySQL settings that is the only occasional reasons for no results on a new installation, especially with only a few products imported.
Would you be able let me know the installation URL so that I can check it out further with you (I'll remove the URL before publishing your reply) ? No problem if that's not convenient, i'll be able to suggest further tests...
