404 - File or directory not found error message

Submitted by speak2daryl on Mon, 2016-10-10 13:11 in

Hi David,

I am getting "404 - File or directory not found" error messages when I try to view Category, Brand, Merchant and Product pages. Basically the only page on my website that is viewable is the homepage.

Do you think this is something that can be fixed or is it an issue with my hosting account?

Thanks,

Daryl

Hello Daryl,

I know you were making changes to .htaccess (from your question here) so it sounds like mod_rewrite is not enabled on your web server.

Firstly, if you could check that the file is actually uploaded as

.htaccess

(having been renamed from htaccess.txt in the distribution)

It is not distributed as .htaccess since files beginning with "." are normally hidden in most operating systems, which makes it tricky so the file needs to be renamed, either locally, or most easily having uploaded using FTP in the remote window in your FTP program - right-click on htaccess.txt > Rename > .htaccess

If that all looks in place, there are two Apache considerations that need to be in place for .htaccess to work -

i) mod_rewrite installed and enabled

ii) Server configuration containing AllowOverride All against the *<Directory ...> entry matching your web root (or higher)

That should be all it is, if you're still not sure or not sure how to go about enabling rewrite on your web server let me know and I'll check it our further with you...

Cheers,
David.
