i know theres lots of theads about the free text search, im pretty sure ive read them all. However i still have issues with the way the search works. Has anyone sucessfully changed it so you can preform exact match searches and search for 3 character words?

yep I have changed my site so that it does a fulltext index on 3 character words.
It requires changes on the server to do with the settings for mysql, get in touch with your server admin and ask them if they can change the miniumum characters to 3, then just implement the changes as per the various posts in the forum.
It does make a BIG difference to the quality of your search results.
