Issue with product name creation

Submitted by london on Mon, 2014-01-20 19:54 in

I'm revisiting a site I built some years ago with this script. I have an issue with trying to get the product names to match across different merchants.

I'm trying to create a standard product name so the same products are grouped. With a number of merchants I have been able to achieve this by using a combination of edit / replace and text before / after filters. However, with a few merchants (electrical retailers on Affiliate Window) I can't think of a way of building a standard product name as certain fields contain no data in the feed.

I want to create a product name in the format Brand / Product id - for instance Smeg KSEV910X

For a number of merchants I've been able to do this, but with some the product name imports as Smeg KSEV910X cooker hoods in Stainless Steel and there are no other fields for me to be able to create a name field. For instance product_number and universal product number contain no data. Because of this the product has two listings - Smeg KSEV910X and Smeg KSEV910X cooker hoods in Stainless Steel.

Can you offer any suggestion how I can get these products to group together?

Can I build a filter for the product name based on the first two words of the imported product name?

Thanks in advance.

Hi london,

Great to hear from one of my very first customers!

Your site is obviously several versions ago, so I think the best thing to do would be to port the latest implementations of Product Mapping and the current filter set into your site and then take the issue from there. Keyword based product mapping is almost certainly what you need, so if you would like to email me the includes/admin.php from your site that will tell me all I need to know in terms of what's required to upgrade and we can take it from there.

An alternative of course would be to re-build the site with the latest distribution - I have maintained template compatibility right back to the very first version of the script so your existing /html/ files will still be valid - so let me know if that might be an option, include a link to your site if that's convenient and I'll work out a step-by-step upgrade process for you...

Cheers,
David.
