URLs

David

We are working on SEO and are putting in place lots of 301s as our shop has changed considerable now we are using PT, comparison and VCodes. We have a few thousand URLs form the old shop in Google and after much research and conversations we are going to 301 as many as we can do...

My question is this

We have an old URL ending in

/product-details.php?id=1115

that is now going to

/dog-shop/product/product-name.html

This example is a product that is not mapped with other merhants, if we map this product, can I assume that as it is the actual /product/product-name.html page that the URL will not change when more merchants are added to the comparison results via mapping?

Think I answered my own question shilst typing this but will ask anyway!

Cheers
Stuart

Hi Stuart,

That's correct - adding more products with the same name (either directly or via Product Mapping) will mean that new URLs stays unchanged.

David.

I just ran a test on a single product

Original name: Dog Car Harness Highwaycontrol - Size S chest circumference 30 - 60 cm

Changed too: Dog Car Harness Highwaycontrol Small

The name was changed via product mapping by adding new product.

So I guess I am going to need to add "All products" with names I want, then do the 301's to the new URls that are created!

So next question, if I can get a CSV of all product names, then change the names in the CSV, is there a way to then import them as new products (for mapping), in the product maping area? admin/productsmap.php

This way I get the naming that I want and its seperate from naming in the actual feeds (kind of)...

Regards
Stuart

Hi Stuart,

Check out this thread with details of a Product Mapping import / export tool. The export file format is

Master Product Name 1
[TAB]Alterantive1
[TAB]Alterantive2
[TAB]Alterantive3
Master Product Name 2
[TAB]Alterantive1
[TAB]Alterantive2
[TAB]Alterantive3

As with the tool itself, alternatives are optional so if you have a simple text file that is just a list of products that you wish to create product mapping entries for then that could be used as the pmimport.php source. Scripts available from the download extras page.

Bear in mind that just having entered a Product Mapping record doesn't mean that product URL will definitely appear on your site; products would have to be imported with that name, either directly or via alternatives set-up for each for the URLs to become active.

Cheers,
David.
