Creating Categories With No Category

Submitted by brentmitchell on Thu, 2011-10-06 00:35 in

This might be a silly question, but I've been dealing with products and now am switching to hotels and destinations using PT, so I'm not sure how to narrow down to a specific city or location since a lot of the travel sites don't have categories.

For example, I want to take my Expedia feed and filter it down to results only from the Cayman Islands...which filter do I use? Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Hi Brent,

If there is a logical field to map to Category e.g. "Country" then you could simply use a Drop Record If Not filter on the Category field for that feed with "Cayman Islands" as the filter value - that would do the trick.

Alternatively, if "Cayman Islands" exists in another field e.g. the Name, then likewise Drop Record If Not against the Name field would do the trick...

Cheers,
David.

Thanks David...

I don't want to drop other records since I will want to use multiple destinations and map them accordingly to the right site or category. How can I filter to find specific destinations w/o removing others?

Hi Brent,

I just followed by email which I think covers this; no need to expose the full category / brand list on any installation you can simply link directly to the ones appropriate to the site...

I'd still like them to be displayed accordingly...would I use keywords shortcode to break them down? Not sure what you mean about linking; I don't want to just show a link, I want to show the entire list...

Hi Brent,

Yes - it sounds like this requirement would be better served through a pure keywords search rather than bringing category into it at all. Consider the following query:

Cayman Islands

For the WordPress Plugin, the short code would be

[pto search="Cayman Islands"]

As this text should appear in any product (travel offer) for the destinations Cayman Islands that should do the trick. There are techniques by which the search can be extended to other fields if the above doesn't return satisfactory results. Bear in mind of course that Price Tapestry is designed for tangible product comparison, as with mobile phone or financial services there isn't really any concept of a query that can reasonably be expected to return a like-for-like comparison...

David.

I'm still struggling to figure this out. I can use the keyword search to show some items, but you can't get specific. I have categories for Hotels, Flights, Home Exchange, All Inclusive Deals, etc. If I just use the keywords for the destination, it doesn't work right.

Are there other short codes that I could try to make this work? Please let me know...thanks.

Hi Brent,

A search can use the merchant: category: or brand: operators; for example:

[pto search="category:Hotels"]

However, it's straight forward to modify the code to support a keyword search in addition to the category, I'll email you a version to try which will let you do that...

Cheers,
David.
