Troubleshooting Feed Importing

Submitted by damer on Mon, 2006-08-14 19:21 in

Hi,

I have a couple of feeds that are not importing. They are registering in the feeds table but the script stops at the data importing point (i guess corresponding to the use of the magic parser code). I was wondering what would be the best way to troubleshoot this as there doesnt seem to be any errors being outputed.

Thanks

Hi,

Are you actually able to register the feeds correctly - i.e. on the registration page step 2, is the first product record displayed - or can't you even get that far?

If not, then it indicates that the format is not recognised and you may need to provide a different format string.

If you are able to register the feeds, at what point after registration does it stop - and what happens - i.e. if you click "Import", does it just immediately reload back to the feed list and show zero products?

It would help if I could see the feed - can you perhaps email me the URL (of your Price Tapestry site) to one of the feeds causing this problem (e.g. http://www.example.com/feeds/somefeed.txt) then I can download it and take a look on my test server...

Cheers,
David.

Hi,
The feed registers correctly in the feeds table but conks out when importing (just goes back to the index saying 0 records)

I will send you an email with a url for the feed ... but is there a way to troubleshoot this -- ie see interactively what is being parsed from the feed?

Thanks.

Thanks - i'll take a look when i've got the URL.

You can import interactively via the command line automation script; however you will only see a record count; and in this scenario it would not provide any more information...

The logical reason for a zero record import would be an incorrect field in the feed having been registered as one of the mandatory fields (product name, buy URL or price) - if any of these are empty the record is not imported.

Cheers,
David.

Hi ...
You were right...the feeds had no data in one of the mandatory fields -- thats what was causing the problem.

Thanks

David,

I'm having trouble parsing the RidgeGear feed at CJ. It imports only 15 records out of a 36MB file. When trying to open it with Excel I get an error.

The text of the 16th record is as follows:

<description>Its a given that we think all our helmets are cool. But when were talking about the new Moto-8 and its state-of-the-art Velocity Flow Ventilation" system, we mean cool as in temperature. . . as in cool-and-dry and that is there really something on my head right now? kinda comfort. Oh sure, its distinctive look, styling and graphics are cool too, but the Moto-8s not just another pretty facemask. Before the sparkly paint and the sleek lines, its function was designed on the trail, tested in the wind tunnel and proven on the trackover and over until we got it right. Then we worked on the details like the channeled Drytime"/Dri-Lex" comfort liner, the QuickFlip" visor screws and lammy suede memory foam pads that conform to your face and head for a custom fit. Do you see any reason there would be a problem? If you want I can email the file, it zips to below 5MB.

Hi Bill,

Rather than email the feed directly, if you could zip and host the file and then email me the URL i'll download it directly to my test server and take a look for you...

Cheers,
David.

What did you do to correct this issue?

Hi,

The problem was down to corrupt data (End Of File marker) in the source feed. The only way we were able to get it working was to fix the corruption, but ultimately of course any problems such as this should be reported to the merchant so that they can fix the problem at source.

Cheers,
David.
