Linkshare datafeed problems

I have downloaded the datafeed(i guess) from Linkshare using the info here
(http://helpcenter.linkshare.com/publisher/questions.php?questionid=671).
The downloaded file was in this format 2312_34234234234_mp.txt.gz ,I used 7-Zip to unzip it and opened the txt file which was filled with garbled unformated text.
Does anyone have any experience on Linkshare datafeeds?? Please help!
I searched on these forums using "linkshare" as the keyword and the nodes take me to some other search pages!

Hello Suziee,

We have lots of users working with Linkshare feeds without any problems - it sounds here as if maybe the unzip has not worked.

Could you please email me a link to your site and i'll download the file from your /feeds/ folder to my test server and check it out for you. It would also help me find out where the problem is if you could also download the .gz file again and leave it in the /feeds/ folder then I'll be able to take a look at that also...

I use their xml feed - I fetch by this url:

ftp://MYLOGIN:PASSWORD@linksynergy.com/MERCHANTID_MYID_mp.xml.gz

I have a cron job to run fetch.sh, which fetches, unzips and imports into my database
