Category grouping

Hello David,

In order to have subcategories, we need to do multiple installation. Alternatively, is it possible to group several category in a single installation to become one main category for navigation purpose

For example, if we have each category for plasma tv, dvd player, digital camera and hifi in a single installation, can we just group them together under electronic. Electronic is just a title or an image. No link. Whereas the actual categories as above are linkable.

If we have navigation on left sidebar for displaying categories, we can display entire categories or select certain categories. So we can have like

Category
Electronic
Plasma tv, Dvd Player, Hifi
Clothing
Men, Women, Kids

Also in category.php page, can we replace it with the above (by grouping) instead of A-Z category listing. Just wondering if this is possible.

thanks
jack

Hello Jack,

What I would suggest is actually creating the grouped index at the top level; which I can help you to do dynamically rather than modify the script to try to combine the categories some-how...

If you follow the multi-installation method for a category hierarchy; it would then be straight forward to create a "master" index at the top level, where you could show, for example:

Electronics

  • DVD Players
  • Hi-Fi
  • Plasma TV

Clothing

  • Kids
  • Mens
  • Womens

etc..

Cheers,
David.

Hello David,

where i can read information about "multi-installation method for a category hierarchy"?

I have 280 subinstallation one per category and search how to create category hierarchy.

Thanks,
Marco Saiu

Hi Marco,

If you treat the sub-directory as simply the top level category that will work nicely, and then in each sub-directory installation, use Category Hierarchy Mapping to define the rest of that category. I posted details of a top level sub-directory multiple installation script in this comment...

Cheers,
David.
