I started importing feeds automatically but it appears that it was too data intensive for my reseller account that my host banned me doing it. Is this the norm or should a normal reseller account be able to cope with the requirements of this?

It's strange for a reseller account to be restricted in this way - normally they are configured so that any intensive work by scripts on your / your customers (if you are actually reselling) use your own processing time and do not affect other accounts.
Something that several users have founds helps in this situation is to add a 1 second sleep() to the import script every 100 products or so - full details in this thread:
