Errors coming up when searching

Submitted by Mark on Thu, 2008-12-04 12:17 in

I get a lot of errors coming up when searching - is this normal e.g. {link saved}

PS: Could you speed up the "Template Dave" on processing my template order please - thanks

Hi Mark,

The Image URLs on this feed appear to be incorrect - they are surrounded by double-quotes; but as the description and product name fields are not this shouldn't be an error in the feed registration. Normally, where double quotes surround fields it is because a text format feed has not been auto-detected as having quoted text.

I would first check the registration and see if the quotation marks are appearing in the sample data, and make sure that the format is correct. If it turns out to be the case therefore, that for some reason the Image URL field in this feed does have superfluous quotation marks then you could add a Search and Replace filter to the Image URL field to remove the quotes (search for quotes, replace with nothing)...

If you're still not sure, let me know the feed filename (email me if you like) and i'll download it from your /feeds/ folder to my test server and take a look for you...

Cheers,
David.

Mark,

There are currently no outstanding Price Tapestry Templates orders as of 10am this morning. No new orders have been placed since then.

Please check the payment account you used to see whether the order was placed successfully.

If you'd like to get in contact with me direct, please visit this page where I can help investigate this for you.

I tried to re-import the feeds but I got this again when I tried with the borders feed

http://cheapest-bargain.co.uk/admin/feeds_register_step2.php?filename=awProductFeed.Borders.xml&useFormat=formatDetected&formatDetected=xml|PRODUCTS%2FMERCH%2FPROD%2F&formatSelected=

Do you know why?

Hi Mark,

It looks like your server / hosting account is struggling to handle such a large
file (half a gigabyte).

How did this file get imported the first time, as it must have worked at least
once so far as the feed is showing as having been imported 2008-12-02 11:12:50
with 184362 products.

Do you recall what may have been different that first time compared to now?

Cheers,
David.

I've had to try several times and I've not succeed yet with the other big ones. Is there a way to break down the import or something?

Hi Mark,

Do you have Telnet / SSH access to your hosting account?

As i'm sure you're aware, the Borders file is over 400MB
which is what seems to be causing the problem. I was able
to download it (partially) to my test server and it registered
/ trial imported correctly.

I'm still curious as to the difference between the first time
it was registered / imported and now - do you know of anything
that has changed?

Presumably the first time, you were able to Register / Import
the borders feed as normal...

If you do have SSH access would you be able to give me temporary
access to that I can investigate this for you - you can of course
email me any details required to login...

Cheers,
David.

David >> Do you have Telnet / SSH access to your hosting account?

Mark >> Yes this is on a hostgator shared account. I'll send you access details. Generally I find that the loading that I can put on one of their shared servers without problems is more than I can put on a low end (single CPU - 1GB) fasthosts dedicated server.

David >> As i'm sure you're aware, the Borders file is over 400MB which is what seems to be causing the problem.

Mark >> The problem is the Blackwell's feed is even bigger and the Pickabook feed has about five times the number of items. I can't see any obvious way of chopping the feeds up automatically at the feed export end. I suppose I could use CSV feeds and make a "feed-splitter" script that chopped the feed into sets of say 10000 items. But I can see that being a nightmare to administer as I need a lot of different supplier feeds for my business model.

David >> I was able to download it (partially) to my test server and it registered / trial imported correctly.

Mark >> So in principle I could have a local server - set it all up - make a backup and install the backup on the hostgator server. But then I'd never be able to automate the feed update.

David >> I'm still curious as to the difference between the first time it was registered / imported and now - do you know of anything that has changed? Presumably the first time, you were able to Register / Import

Mark >> Well the first time a Rentacoder and myself struggled for about three days to get the Borders, Blackwells and Pickabook feeds to register and eventually the borders one did (presumably at some time the server was under lower load).

Thanks for the great service!
Cheers,

Mark

Hi Mark,

Whilst Price Tapestry itself does not have any imposed limitations, there
are going to be limitations of resources, file size, database size etc.
that hosting companies are going to have in place, and when working
with such large feeds this is always going to prove tricky when
not working with a dedicated server.

That said, Hostgator is one of the best performing shared hosts out there,
and their MySQL infrastructure is superb and extremely quick, so we should
be able to get you working.

I have various tools and utilities that help with the importing of very
large feeds, but as helping you out with these will require information
about your hosting account it is best to pick this up by email.

You mentioned that you would email me access details - I have not received
anything as yet - please use the email address on this page
and i'll get back to you with anything else I need to know and then get
you up and running...

Cheers,
David.
