Server Choice

Hi everyone,

I need bit of advice from as many of you as possible. I hvae about 5 different domain hosted on a dedicated server. The database has grown quiet considerably (over 4 gig as of today). Last months or so, server was constantly crashing, due to googlebot and yahoo surlup is running havoc (whic is good thing). Now I am trying to invest in a new server. The choices are as follows:

Server 1.

Processors: AMD Opteron 1218 HE DC (2.6Ghz X 2)
RAM: 4 GIG
OS: Choices from: CentOS 5 + Plesk, openSUSE 10.2 + Plesk, CentOS 5 Minimal, openSUSE 10.2 Minimal, Debian 4 (Etch) Minimal, Ubuntu 6.06 (Feisty Fawn)
Scripting: PHP5 and Perl

Server 2:

Processors: Intel Quad Core Xeon (2.13Ghz X 4)
RAM: 2 GIG of DDR2
OS: Ubuntu
Scripting: PHP5 / PHP4 in parallel mode and Perl

Most ovious difference is one is dual core other quad core. However, the are some fundamental difference between these servers. Server 1 has more RAM and choioce of Operating System compare to Server 2 which has Scripting flexibility with PHP4 and PHP5 both running in parallel and has DDR2 RAM. Incidently, both server comes with unlimited bandwidth.

So friends, is it SERVER 1 or SERVER 2?

Thanks for your time

Hi,

I'm afraid I'm no real expert in terms of server choice; but my experience from desktop work is that in most cases more RAM wins the day over raw processor speed. Debian would be my OS of choice being the most "normal" Linux distribution of the available options; although Ubuntu (Server edition presumably) would be just as good, being Debian based of course.

Cheers,
David.
