Possible error in search results and Product mapping

Submitted by hockey on Sat, 2008-08-09 03:14 in

So, I have noticed when I map products together where the stores providing the feeds have product names that differ greatly, I am getting mixed search results.

Sometimes I come up with the "Compare prices" link for a certain item, and sometime not depending on what I type into the search query.

Here is a specific example I'm working with on my site (www.chizeaphockey.com - feel free to see for yourself)

I have "product mapped" NHL hockey jerseys from two different stores. Here is an example of one of the jerseys:

Store 1: "Anaheim Ducks Rbk Edge Premier Hockey Jersey"
Store 2: "RBK 7185 Premier NHL Replica Hockey Jersey - Anaheim Ducks"

Now if you search for a "Anaheim Ducks Jersey", I get the desired result of giving my user to "compare prices"...

However if you search for "rbk edge jersey", the search brings the product for store #1 only and does not give the user the opportunity to compare prices.

Now I understand that the second search contains words not in Store #1's Product Name, but shouldn't it always come back with "compare prices" because they are mapped?

Is this an error? or is there a way to fix this?

Wouldn't life be so much easier if all stores just named their products the same thing :)?

Hi,

This sounds like the mapping has not been applied correctly; as when mapped the original name is dropped during import and only the mapped name makes it into the database.

When setting up mapping; I recommend using copy and paste between the product page that you want to map and the Product Mapping edit box in the admin area; as the mappings are applied after the product names have been sanitsised (normalised) by the import procedure.

Don't forget also that having set-up product mapping any feeds that the mapping is intended to apply to must be imported again before the changes take effect...

Cheers,
David.
