David,
I am wondering about the possibility of sharing the feed directory between two sites.
Site A would have a full PT installation and host the shared feed directory with everything saved to the database on site A.
Site B would have a full PT installation and access the shared feed directory on site A with everything saved to the database on site B.
I have had a quick look at this and it looks as though it may possible to do by specifying in site B's admin/index.php that the feed directory is ftp://site A. If this would work all we should need to do is to add the FTP username and password to login and access the feeds in the directory. As my total feeds are expected to be around 1,200-1,300 it would mean half the work and shave months off the work needed to be done if the two sites can share the same feed directory.
Kind regards

David,
They are currently on separate servers. I will possibly put them on the same server, but am tied into a minimum contract at the moment and I don't think that works with 1&1 as I have already tried it and all that happens is that it redirects to the first URL registered in the account unless I go for framed content.
Kind regards
Stephen
David,
I don't want to rush you, have you had a look at this to see if it is at all possible?
Thanks
Stephen
Hi Stephen,
Because the admin section is so tightly coupled with the local file-system it's going to be a significant modification to make it be able to reference a remote filing system, as well as possibly causing performance issues when it comes to importing.
Could you perhaps describe your setup in a little more detail as well as the problems caused by not being able to access a single file store. I presume at the moment you are simply downloading the feeds to both servers. Is this what you are trying to avoid?
Cheers,
David.
David,
Yes, I have been downloading the feeds separately to each site. Is there some other way to do this? One site downloads by shell scripts, which fairly often causes server timeouts due to downloading and then uploading all the feeds. My new site uses FTPiggy which obviously halves the server load and processing times. The site databases run on localhost so no remote access is permissable from external sources as far as I know.
Many thanks,
Stephen
David,
Put this on hold for the moment, I have had a brainwave and am trying something new. Will let you know my results once I've tested it over the next few days.
Thanks for all your help,
Stephen
David,
My brainwave has worked, I have set an automatic daily FTP of the files from one site to another.
Kind regards

David,
I have sorted out the problem with the server on this and it all appears to be working OK now. I am in the process of moving all my domains to the same dedicated server. I am planning to use each site's PT installation semi-independently, but they will both be using the same database and jump.php. How do I get site b to use site a's jump.php?
Kind regards,
Hi Stephen,
This is relatively easy to setup if both sites are hosted on the same server. However, as you mention using ftp:// that implies you might be thinking about different servers....
Is that the case?
Cheers,
David.
