One of my feeds doesn't have any product names so I can't import it. Is it possible to write a filter to insert a product name using some text, the merchant's category and product number to make it unique ? Could someone give me some pointers please as I'm not really sure what I'm doing !!

You can register any field you like as the product name (so it sounds like you may have a product number in your feed), and then add text before or after the field value using the "Text Before" and "Text After" filters as required.
Within the text that you add using these filters, you can bring in the value of other fields in the feed by using placeholders, for example %CATEGORY% if the category field is called CATEGORY in this feed. To see what names to use, check the values in the first column in the sample data on the feed registration page (step 1). More info here...
