SEO, maintenance, promotion and marketing

Submitted by redspan on Thu, 2007-11-22 11:14 in

Hello,

So, I have a site listing over 160,000 products, the design is good enough for the task at hand, and the ongoing maintenance is either automated or can be done manually if need be. Basic SEO is done and it's registered on Google (120 pages so far).

Apart from buying the PT software there's been the additional expense of a template and a trial run with some paid for traffic (waste of $60!).

I have submitted the site to the UK search engines and setup and automated process to do this every month using my tool of choice, Axandra's Internet Business Promoter (have been using it for two years and it works really well - try the free trial download).

Can anyone who's made a good return on this process offer any tips and advice for ongoing SEO, marketing and promotion?

Is PPC (like Adwords) a gamble that pays off?

When can I retire to the Bahamas? ;-)

Regards,
Ben

Hello Ben,

Presumably you have registered your sitemap with Google Sitemaps (docs)? Lots of us have found this really helps with coverage, as does enabling gzip compression if your server supports it (see this thread).

Once your site does have good rankings for your niche, my #1 tip is to keep watching the affiliate networks for new merchants that would be suitable for your site and be one of the first to get their feed up...! If you want to be even more pro-active; find networks that offer a merchant referral scheme, and then recruit new merchants to that network that would be suitable for your site...!

Cheers,
David.

Hello David,

Thanks. Yes, I have it registered with Google and the sitemap is working. There are a few errors relating to feeds that didn't work but apart from that it's been operating since November 3rd.

I've now made the change to the config file and renamed the .htaccess file.

Not sure about gzip compression but I'll check, and I'll bear what you said in mind about new feeds and referrals.

Regards,
Ben
