Installation for Dummies

Submitted by kjw on Wed, 2007-10-24 16:58 in

Please help! I am only on step 3 of Installation and am lost!
Step one has me open config file..did that and step 2.
Step 3:
"Upload the files and directory structure to your web server".
Dumb question, but exactly what file(s)as I only worked on the one "config" file?
My hosting is through 1&1 and I have one link to connect to Database and another to link to MySQL, so can someone please point me in right direction!
Thank you!

Hi,

You need to upload ALL the files to your website. config.php is the only one you need to change before uploading, that's all!

When you got your hosting account, you should have received details of your MySQL server hostname, and your username and password (probably the same as your FTP username and password). These are the details you need to enter into your modified config.php.

If you don't have a single database already setup for you to use, you will need to create one for Price Tapestry first, which you should be able to do through your hosting control panel...

Cheers,
David.

Thank you for the help David!
I think I'm making this harder than it needs to be!? I have uploaded the files to my website now.
Only one more problem! The next step has taken forever.."browse to setup.php". I can't figure out how to open it correctly. If I click on it the same options don't appear.
I apologize for taking your time for something so simple, but I really want to get this working.
Thanks in advance!

Hi,

setup.php is one of the files that you will have uploaded, so if your site is www.example.com, you would now browse to:

http://www.example.com/setup.php

You will then be able to install the database by clicking the link.

Then, it's just a case of uploading the feeds you want to use to the /feeds/ directory, and then going to...

http://www.example.com/admin/

...to register and import them.

Hope this helps...
Cheers,
David.

Hello again!
I have downloaded datafeed from overstock-renamed it-uploaded it to feeds.
Now I'm at register and trial download.

Problem 1: input product name and price not a problem, but there is no "buy url" on datafeed. How do I do to get the buy url without having to manually put it in for all products?(I'm using excel)By not having the buy url there, could this be why I'm getting Error 500 code?

Thank you!

Hi,

The first thing you need to do is make sure that you understand what you are expected to do with the data in the feed that you are using in order to construct an affiliate URL. Some feeds (and this may be the case here) do no contain an affiliate URL (Buy URL as Price Tapestry calls it), but instead you just have product codes. You are then expected to prefix the product code with the merchant's URL and your affiliate ID. For example, if all that is in the feed is this:

1234

...but the merchant instructs you to create an affiliate URL using this ID as follows:

http://www.example.com/product.asp?affiliate=YOUR_AFFILIATE_ID&product=1234

In this case (remember this is only an example, it probably isn't the case with the Overstock feed), you can use Price Tapestry's "Text Before" filter to construct the Buy URL. To do this, simply register the product ID field as the Buy URL, and then add a Text Before filter to this field containing the merchant website, affiliate ID etc., ending in "&product=" (without the quotes).

If you're not sure how to get an affiliate URL from your Overstock feed (although it sounds like you may know as you can do it in Excel), then contact technical support at the network and ask for the details.

Hope this helps!
Cheers,
David.

Thanks David

This will work with the overstock feed.

I have been having trouble getting past registration and trial import. I was hoping it had something to do with not having a product url to list. I've contacted my host and have a real problem understanding what they're saying. I wish I knew how to speak their language or they knew more english. All I can really make out is it is on my end and everything on their end is 100% right.

Could I email you a link to see if you notice something I've messed up?
Thanks,
Jennifer
