Hi David, is there a previous thread you could recommend for .htaccess..?
I seem to have lost generic page numbers .. they disappeared when I created brand filters. I just want to be able to see 2.html, when there is nothing selected after the initial search.php?q=merchant&page=2 (I know it used to do that, but I just noticed it contains the full string now).

Whether or not html/navigation.php creates clean or full links depends on the rewrite parameter. Ordinarily, a direct link to:
search.php?q=merchant:Merchant+Name
...is not rewritten, so the follow on links will contain a page= parameter.
...but from the page:
/merchant/Merchant-Name/
...rewrite is set to 1 by .htaccess, so the clean links will be generated.
When applying a filter, the filter form will be submitted to the non re-written search.php page, so you will then get page=x in the URL...
