Question about duplicate product

Submitted by madison on Thu, 2006-09-28 16:53 in

First of all , Top support you give David for what looks like a great program.

Sometimes when a search is performed , the results are several but they are all the same

for instance go here (hope the person whos this is dont mind) http://www.buy24-7.net/ and search for scream trilogy there are then several results but they are all the same product, how do you combine this into one result so it compares the price in one result.

i assume its because the title of the product slightly varies

any help would be great

Hi There,

Yes - it is because of the slightly different product names. Unfortunately, there is little that can be done about this since it is almost impossible to imply their similarity programatically.

The "big" price comparison sites employ armies of people just to link the products together between different merchants as the task is that difficult.

Cheers,
David.

ok have been thinking.

can you use the filter search and replace, to then clean up the product name, so not to replace all the product name but search for a specific in the product name field and only replace or delete that part of it?

Hi madison,

Yes - you can certainly use filters to match up products. Simply pick the most common name as the master; and then for other merchants use a search and replace filter to match, for example "Apple iPod 60GB" and replace it with "iPod 60GB" which is the more common name.

Cheers!
David.

but say , if one retailer always puts cd at the end of the product name but the other retailers dont then these items would be picked up separately, so could the filter be used to remove "CD" from the product name of the total data feed.

Absolultely - just enter nothing in the replace box and you can remove any string you like from every product name.

David.

ok , have tried this.

a retailer product name is "elvis best of CD" and all the CDs have CD in the product name.

i insert a filter , to search CD and replace with blank, then update feed , but no CD in the feed is removed?

any idea if i am doing something wrong

Hi madison,

Are you definitely only working with one merchant? Sometimes when this happens there are other feeds that still contain the " CD" version of the product name; so just applying the filter to one feed won't get rid of all products with that name.

If it's still not working perhaps you could let me know the URL of your site and the username / password to the admin area (if you have password protected it) and i'll take a look for you (reply to your registration code email is the easiest way)...

Cheers,
David.

i have many retailers.

remove the product name , thats not what i want to do , i want to remove "CD" from the product name , so "elvis CD" becomes "elvis"

Hi Madison,

Sorry, I didn't mean "get rid of all products with that name", I meant that it would not remove every instance of "Elvis CD" by just applying the filter to one feed if there is another feed in your site that also has an "Elvis CD". That might be why you still see the product.

What you want to do should work fine - search for "CD" and replace with "" on the product name field. If that's not working (!!remember to import again after changing filters!!) I'll need to have a look at your site to find out why - so if you can email me the URL to your site i'll take a look for you...

Cheers,
David.
