You can delete feeds once imported. The products will remain in the database until you "De-Register" them. If you have not come across the "De-Register" link yet, it appears on the admin home page alongside a previously registered feed that is no longer in the /feeds directory.
Registration information will still be saved, so if you subsequently upload a feed with the same filename again (as long as you haven't de-registered it) then you won't have to register it again.
