import problem on large file

I've got an issue with importing one of my feeds. It's an XML of around 23mb and 11,000 products that when importing the server times out. I tried it locally to eliminate php timeouts on the host and it doesn't look like its that. It seems to be stuck in a loop and doesn't import, just continues to look like it is. The trial import worked fine though. After going back to admin home it shows as no products being imported apart from the 10 trial imports.

I thought it may have something to do with it updating rows instead of the normal delete insert so deleted all products for that particular merchant and tried importing from scratch. Still no joy. Do you know what this might be?
