In the process of updating all sites, on the sites I use slow import it seems to be taking a lot longer to slow import with the latest edition compared to the older one. Has anything changed in the script that could explain this?

Do you have any Product Mapping by RegExp entries configured?
This feature is the only change that should have any impact on import speed but if there are no entires configured then the entire section of that part of the import process is skipped. However having just one entry configured means that the RegExp mapping logic has to be applied against every product being imported and would certainly have an effect on the import speed as compared to 14/06A otherwise there shouldn't be any difference.
If that's not the case, let me know and I'll check it out further with you - for example, if you have a particularly large feed that you are seeing a noticeable difference in slow import time between distributions if you could email me a link to the installation and filename of the feed I'll download it from your /feeds/ folder to my test server and check it out for you...
