Am I assuming correct that there is no need to backuo the actual database (which can be huge) as long as I make regular backups with the integrated database tool of PT? If ever necessary, restoring from this backup file will allow me to recreate the complete database, right?

That's spot on. The products table can be re-built from a full import, so it's only the other tables that need to be backed up which can all be done through the Database Tool.
