Product Comparison

Submitted by Paul Gregson on Wed, 2013-06-26 11:50 in

Good afternoon.

PT newbie here so i apologise if these questions have already been answered but i can't spot them in the forum.

I'm looking to compare prices of products from different datafeeds. I have imported the datafeeds ok and the products are listing when i carry out a search however the only way i can find to create a price comparison is to go into Product Mapping and create a new product.

This is fine for the niche site I'm initially setting up but the site i want to develop once i've mastered PT has hundreds of products to compare.

Is there a way of creating the comparisons without product mapping?

Many thanks

Paul

Hi Paul, and welcome to the forum!

Automated product comparison is extremely difficult computationally, I have racked my brain over this time and time again experimenting with word / letter matching thresholds etc. The first issue one tends to come up against is accessories of a product being compared with the product itself (e.g. Blue Widget being compared with "Blue Widget Stand") so I looked at including price in the algo - but it soon becomes a case of clutching at straws!

In case you weren't aware, and are fortunate enough to have feeds containing product numbers e.g. EAN (European Article Numbers) then you can use automated product mapping by UID which I posted recently.

Automated methods may work for a tight niche environment - if you have any ideas or could perhaps post 2 or 3 example product names that would ideally be compared for your site I'll take a look...

Cheers,
David.
